It has been a year since I visited Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. Whether you want to explore the historic side of the island, the beautiful beaches, or try out some water sports, Puerto Plata has a lot to offer!
Puerto Plata is the Oldest City in the New World
Founded in 1502 by Christopher Columbus’s brother, Bartholomew, Puerto Plata is home to the first cathedral, hospital, and court of law in the Americas. The city has a rich history, and the beautiful Victorian architecture is a testament to the wealth that flowed through the region during the 1800s.
Puerto Plata is also home to the only cable car system in the Caribbean, which transports visitors to the top of Mount Isabel de Torres. At the summit, you’ll find a replica of the famous Christ the Redeemer statue that overlooks Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The statue in Puerto Plata is one of only seven worldwide and offers breathtaking views of the city and the surrounding landscape.
Our First Stop: Amber Museum / Tobacco Exhibition of La Aurora Cigar Factory
This excursion did not include a visit to the La Aurora Cigar Factory, which is a notable change compared to other trips we found from previous visitors. These alterations may be related to the aftermath of COVID-19, although I could not confirm this. We toured the Amber Museum, which has a significant connection to the Jurassic Park franchise due to its thematic relevance. The museum boasts an extensive collection of amber that features perfectly preserved ancient organisms, including insects and plants. The storyline of Jurassic Park is rooted in the DNA from a yellow stone, which sets the entire saga into motion. In reality, amber is not a stone but tree resin. The amber originates from the Dominican Republic, a leading producer of this fossilized resin, dating back to the Cretaceous period. When planning your next visit, be sure to include the Amber Museum, where you can discover elements linked to the Jurassic Park films while observing and, in some cases, touching the amber resin.
From la Aurora Cigar Factory, we had a representative who they called a Maestro due to his years in the business of handmaking tobacco. We enjoyed the experience of learning how to handroll a tobacco, see the Maestro do it, and for those more enthusiastic than myself, enjoy it right there and then. I have to say the smell of fresh tobacco leaves and the taste does not compare to those already manufactured.
The Dominican Republic is Home to the Tallest Mountain in the Caribbean
Pico Duarte is the tallest mountain in the Caribbean, it’s located in the Dominican Republic. At 10,164 feet, the peak is part of the Central Mountain Range, which runs across the island. If you love to hike, you’ll want to visit Pico Duarte and take on the challenge of reaching the top of the Caribbean.
If you’re not into hiking, no worries. The Dominican Republic has plenty of other mountains and hills that offer incredible views and hiking opportunities.
Our Second Stop: Del Oro Chocolate Factory
At the Del Oro Chocolate Factory in Puerto Plata, visitors embark on a delightful journey through the world of chocolate production. This factory prides itself on sourcing high-quality cacao beans from local farmers, ensuring a rich flavor profile in every bite. During the tour, guests can witness the entire chocolate-making process, from bean to bar, and even participate in tastings of their delectable products. The factory also emphasizes sustainable practices, supports the community, and promotes environmentally friendly methods. A visit here not only satisfies your sweet tooth but also deepens your appreciation for the art and science behind chocolate craftsmanship.

The Dominican Republic is Home to the First Cathedral in the Americas
This historic city, located on the north coast of the Dominican Republic, is home to the first cathedral in the Americas, the Catedral de Santa Maria La Menor, which was built in 1540. The city was founded in 1496 and is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the Americas. The city’s historic district is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is filled with beautiful old buildings and cobblestone streets.
The historic district is a great place to explore on foot and take in the sights and sounds of this vibrant city. You can also visit the Amber Museum, which is housed in a beautiful old mansion and features a collection of amber artifacts and jewelry, and the San Felipe Fortress, which was built in the 16th century to protect the city from pirates.

Our Third and Final Stop: Macorix House of Rum
At the Macorix House of Rum, established in 1899, visitors have the opportunity to explore the fascinating realm of rum production, gaining insight into the extensive history and traditions surrounding this cherished spirit in the Dominican Republic. The guided tour provides an overview of the distillation process, highlighting the careful craftsmanship that goes into producing premium rums. Attendees can sample a variety of aged rums, each offering unique flavors and aromas that embody the island’s distinct terroir. This engaging experience not only delights the senses but also informs guests about the cultural importance of rum in Dominican society. Macorix offers a selection of blends to cater to different tastes, including Gran Reserve, Anejo, Rebel, Coco Splash, and Pineapple (Pina). It is a more enjoyable experience when shared with others, so be sure to interact and connect with fellow cruise passengers.
